Automatic Doors Norwich: A Welcoming, Accessible & Hygienic Entrance
The entrance to your building is the first physical interaction a customer or visitor has with your organisation. An automatic door system is a silent welcome—it signals professionalism, accessibility, and care. For any public-facing building in Norwich, from a retail shop on St Stephens Street to a medical centre or a modern office block, a smooth, reliable automatic door is no longer a luxury; it’s an expectation.

The JDL Door Automation Journey: Our 6-Step Process
At JDL Automation, we specialise in the design, installation, and, most critically, the safe maintenance of automatic door systems. We understand that your entrance needs to be three things:
- Fully Accessible: Effortlessly welcoming everyone, including wheelchair users, parents with prams, and those with mobility challenges, ensuring you meet DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) requirements.
- Hygienic & Convenient: Providing a touch-free “hands-free” solution that improves hygiene and allows for the easy movement of people, even when their hands are full.
- Reliable & Efficient: Operating smoothly, day in and day out, while helping to maintain your building’s internal temperature and reduce energy costs.
Our local Norwich team manages the entire process, ensuring your installation is not only sleek and modern but, above all, fully compliant with all UK and European safety standards.

The Initial Consultation & Site Survey
Every entrance is unique. Our process begins with a free, no-obligation site survey where our expert engineer visits your premises. This is a technical assessment to ensure we design a system that is perfectly suited to your building and its patterns of use.
We will assess:
- Footfall & Usage: How many people use the door every day? Is it a high-traffic supermarket entrance or a low-traffic private office door?
- Space & Structure: We take precise measurements of the entrance, checking the available “reveal” space for sliding doors or the structural integrity of the frame for a swing operator.
- Purpose & Accessibility: We discuss your primary goals. Is this a new installation for convenience, or are you retrofitting an old, heavy door to meet DDA compliance?
- Fire & Escape Routes: This is critical. We identify if the doorway is a designated fire escape route, which dictates the type of “fail-safe” or “fail-secure” system and fire alarm integration required.
Using the data from our survey, we design a solution that is safe, compliant, and matches your building’s aesthetic. We will walk you through the two main options:
- Automatic Sliding Door Systems:
- The Solution: The gold standard for new builds and major refurbishments. These systems consist of one (single-slide) or two (bi-parting) door leaves that slide open, offering the widest and clearest possible opening.
- Best For: High-traffic areas like retail stores, hospitals, and office lobbies.
- Automatic Swing Door Operators:
- The Solution: The perfect choice for retrofitting automation onto existing doors. A discreet, powerful operator (a “box”) is fitted above the door, which automatically opens and closes the hinged door.
- Best For: Improving accessibility in buildings with existing door frames, such as doctor’s surgeries, schools, and smaller offices.
We then finalise the activation and safety methods:
- Activation: This is what opens the door. We’ll recommend the right fit, from motion sensors (radar) for public access, secure “push to open” pads for DDA compliance, or access control integration (keypads/fobs) for secure staff areas.
- Safety: This is what prevents the door from closing on a person. We will build in a system of presence sensors and safety beams around the doorway, which are non-negotiable for public safety.
You will receive a detailed quotation that clearly lists all hardware, safety features, and installation work required, ensuring you are fully compliant with the BS EN 16005 safety standard.
Planning & Preparation
We understand that your entrance is a critical part of your operation. For a retail store, a surgery, or an office, downtime is not an option. Our planning team will coordinate the installation at a time that causes the absolute minimum disruption to your business, often working “out-of-hours” (evenings or weekends) if required. We pre-configure all components and coordinate with any other trades (like glaziers or electricians) to ensure a seamless on-site process.
Professional, Safe Installation
Our highly-trained, qualified engineers arrive on-site to carry out the installation to the highest standards.
For a sliding door, this involves meticulously fitting the header track, running all power and sensor cabling, and hanging the new glass door leaves. For a swing operator, we securely mount the unit and connect the drive arm to the existing door leaf.
In all installations, our focus is on precision. We ensure all wiring is discreet and protected, and that all sensors are positioned perfectly to create a safe and reliable system.

WHY US?
Safety is our non-negotiable priority. As proud members of ADSA (Automatic Door Suppliers Association), JDL Automation ensures every sliding or swing door is installed and maintained to the highest BS EN 16005 safety standards. You can trust our local engineers to keep your entrance legal, safe, and welcoming.
An automatic door is not “finished” when it moves; it’s finished when it is proven to be safe. This is the most important step in our process, known as commissioning.
- Full Safety Test: We rigorously test every safety sensor and fail-safe mechanism, checking and re-checking that the door will stop or reverse instantly when an obstruction is detected.
- ADSA Safety Check: Our ADSA-accredited engineers perform a rigorous safety check of all sensors, opening speeds, and hold-open times to ensure full compliance with BS EN 16005.
- Full Handover & Logbook: Once we are 100% satisfied, we train you and your staff on how to use the system, including any function switches (e.g., “exit only,” “hold open”). We will then provide you with a full safety logbook and a declaration of conformity, giving you documented proof that your door is safe and compliant.
Ongoing Maintenance & Local Support non-negotiable priority
Under UK law, a building owner is legally responsible for ensuring their automatic doors are safe for public use. The BS EN 16005 standard recommends that all automatic doors are serviced by a qualified technician at least once (and often twice) per year.
JDL Automation provides comprehensive Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) packages to ensure you meet this legal obligation. Our local Norwich engineers will visit at scheduled intervals to clean, lubricate, and, most importantly, re-test every safety feature, ensuring your door remains safe and reliable for years to come.
And because we’re local, if you ever do have a problem, our responsive repair team is on hand to get your entrance secured and operating again with minimal delay.
